SPDC Opening Event

The ARC Research Hub for Smart Process Design and Control is a national and international collaboration dedicated to transforming mineral and metallurgical processes for a low-carbon steel industry.

The opening event will feature speakers from the Australian Research Council, Monash University, Rio Tinto, The University of Queensland, and UNSW, along with representatives from our many university and industry partners. Together, they will introduce the Hub’s vision to address one of the world’s most pressing challenges: reducing emissions in the steel sector.

Uniting leading researchers from Australian universities with major global steel and mining companies, the Hub will drive cutting-edge advances in physics-informed modelling, AI, and smart process design. These innovations aim to optimise current mineral and metallurgical operations while enabling the development of new low-carbon technologies across the steel value chain.

As one of the world’s largest exporters of iron ore, Australia plays a pivotal role in global decarbonisation efforts. Through world-leading collaboration, training, and technology development, the Hub will strengthen Australia’s leadership in sustainable resource processing and build a greener future for the steel industry.
